Royal Mail says drones will allow people in remote areas to receive and send their mail faster. Drones can also improve the reliability of postal services and reduce CO2 emissions.
Autonomous flying drones are replacing the transport of mail by ferry, plane and truck. Royal Mail expects drones to be less affected by bad weather. “They can also fly in fog and transport is not dependent on the tides,” Chris Paxton, Royal Mail’s head of drone testing, told the BBC.
Mail planes will fly to the Isles of Scilly, the Shetland Islands, the Orkney Islands and the Hebrides, among others. Royal Mail aims to have 200 drones in the air by 2025, and then more than 500 will be able to serve every corner of the UK.
