Apple has announced new accessibility features for the iPhone for the blind, deaf and hard of hearing. For example, devices have a door detection feature that directs people with reduced or no vision to a door.
This feature works with cameras from recent iPhones and iPads. Blind and partially sighted people can use this feature to find the door of a building when they arrive at a place they have never been before. With the option, they are told how far to walk to the door.
Also, the function tells them whether the door is open or closed. This describes how to open the door when closed, for example with a lever or a button. In addition, the software can read symbols and text on the door and have the phone read out whether the person should push or pull.
Apple is also adding a new feature for the deaf and hard of hearing. Live Caption converts audio to text. For example, users can add captions to FaceTime and phone calls. The feature will be in beta later this year and will initially only work in English.
Control Apple Watch via iPhone
Apple Watch Mirroring was also announced. This option makes it easier for people with physical or motor disabilities to use an Apple Watch (Series 6 or newer).
Then the accessibility options work through the connection to an iPhone, which can be used to power the Watch. This includes voice and key commands. People can also use simpler hand gestures to perform actions.
It is unknown when the features will be added.
