Google: “The Russian hackers behind the Brexit leak”

That’s a new website called “Very English State Coop,” which contains emails from Richard Dearlove, the former head of British intelligence, and several others campaigning for Brexit, Reuters writes. The UK’s referendum on whether or not to leave the European Union took place in 2016.

According to the site, these Brexit supporters secretly control the UK. Dearlove is said to be working on the resignation of former British Prime Minister Theresa May. Unlike her successor, Boris Johnson, May was not in favor of a hard Brexit.

There was also little information on the site other than a large number of emails from a Protonmail account.

“Relations with Russia are clear”

It’s unclear if the emails are genuine, but Dearlove said he was “aware” of “an action against a Proton account containing emails to and from me”. ProtonMail is recognized as a secure and privacy-friendly email service.

Shane Huntley, head of Google’s cybersecurity group, said the group behind the State Coop site has clear ties to Cold River, a Russian hacking group. There was “technical evidence”. The veracity of Google’s claims has not yet been confirmed.
