Research: play helps with rehabilitation after stroke

Virtual Skiing

Recovery Rapids, the game used for the study, places patients in a virtual canoe, after which they have to perform various tasks. Players take as many arm attacks as possible as they row, row, pick up trash, swing to steer, and reach out to clear cobwebs and bats.

The further the players progress, the more difficult the missions become. In addition, therapists stay in constant contact with patients through telehealth apps, allowing them to provide feedback and discuss new goals.

“With this new approach to play at home, we are reducing patient costs and therapist time while improving comfort and overall health outcomes,” said Rachel Proffitt, one of the researchers. “This is a win-win situation.”
