A new alliance of tech companies formed to normalize metadata

A ‘metaverse’ is the idea of a social space that is shared wholly or partly virtually, for example through smart glasses and VR. The term has been used more and more since last year, after Facebook’s parent company Meta announced that it was fully committed to the development of such a metaverse.

Companies write that in order to create such a meta-universe, there must be standards by which different companies connect their corners of this world. The new Metaverse Standards Forum should start thinking about ways to further develop Metaverse in a way that brings participating companies together.

“The Forum will focus on pragmatic projects such as prototyping, setting up hackathons and designing open source software tools that can be used by anyone,” the organization said. Developing a metadata repository works best when there are “open standards” that anyone can use.
