Microsoft: Russian hackers are increasingly attacking NATO countries

Microsoft reports that the US is the main target of Russian hacking attempts. There were also many cyber attacks in Poland. Most military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine is coordinated from Poland. Russian hackers are also targeting the Baltic states.

According to Microsoft, there has been an increase in Russian cyber attacks on networks in Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Turkey in recent weeks. “We have also seen an increase in similar activities targeting foreign ministries of other NATO countries,” he said. Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership in May.

In addition to government networks, Russian hackers are targeting think tanks, charities, IT companies, energy suppliers and other “critical infrastructures”.

stolen data

According to Microsoft’s research, Russian hackers have managed to break into 29% of networks. In a quarter of these cases, data was stolen. According to Microsoft, the actual hacker success rate is higher because some organizations store data on their own systems rather than in the Microsoft cloud.

During the occupation of Ukraine, Russian hackers destroyed the extensive Viasat satellite network and damaged the systems of Ukrainian government agencies. Internet traffic in the occupied parts of Ukraine was also intercepted by Russian providers.
