Total damage not so bad
Compared to previous years, the total damage so far is not that serious. In 2021, €7.2 million in damage was reported, compared to €3.5 million in the previous two years. However, a Fraud Helpdesk spokesperson told Pointer that the total amount depends on individual claims. Some victims are ripped off for several tons.
In addition, the fraud helpdesk hotlines were closed earlier this year due to the corona quarantine. In particular, victims of dating scams often prefer to call rather than fill out a web form, the spokesperson said.
Investment fraud on the rise
Meanwhile, the way scammers operate will also change. In the past, perpetrators mainly pretended to have money problems and asked their victims to advance money. Now the strategy is moving towards investment fraud. Scammers claim to be rich and point to stocks or cryptocurrencies as the reason. Then comes the offer to invest on behalf of the victim, then the money is gone.
