Facebook’s parent company Meta fined €17 million by Irish privacy watchdog, reports Bloomberg Tuesday. According to the regulator, the technology company failed to prevent a series of Facebook data breaches in 2018, thereby violating European Union privacy rules.
According to the DPC, Meta “has not taken appropriate technical and organizational measures”. Data breaches affected 50 million accounts.
Watchman began his investigation in December 2018 and focused on 12 different data breaches. A software bug gave third-party developers access to photos of millions of users in a single data breach.
A spokesperson for Meta denies that the company has been lax with user data. According to the spokesperson, the fine is for “a 2018 practice that has since been amended and which has not been a negligence in protecting user information.”
