The New York Times reported that a Supreme Court judge delivered the verdict yesterday. The ban comes after multiple attempts by a Brazilian court to ask Telegram to delete the accounts of a prominent supporter of current president Jair Bolsonaro. The accounts are said to spread misinformation about the election and call for violence.
Apple, Google and local telecom providers should block the app in Brazil, at least until Telegram deletes accounts and pays a series of fines. Users attempting to access the app through a VPN could face a $2,000 fine.
Pavel Durov, owner of the messaging app, said he has not received many messages from the court. He apologized to the court and asked for time to appoint a Brazilian arbitrator for Telegram. The judge said he sent several emails directly to Durov.
