Supreme Court Upholds Conviction Of ‘Cura’ Hoyos

BOGOTA. THE HERALD learned of the decision of Supreme Courtof 122 pages, published on September 7, which, with a speech by Judge Fernando Bolaños, condemned the former mayor of Barranquilla, Bernardo ‘El Cura’ Hoyosfor embezzlement by appropriation.

Supreme Court rejected a second-instance appeal filed by Hoyos, who is currently incarcerated at home in the Atlantic capital, and upholds the sentence of seven years in prison after payments made for an initial value contract from $1,490 million, to the former headquarters of the Banco de la República, but which ended up costing $4,966 million.

The Court dismissed the petitions for limitation and annulment filed by Fernando Jorge Thorne Brown, Bernardo Hoyos Montoya, Guillermo Enrique Hoenigsberg, Alcibiades de Asís Bustillo Cervantes and Oswaldo Saavedra Ballesteros, before the conviction by the Third Criminal Court of the Bucaramanga Circuit in 2020 and confirmed by the Bucaramanga Supreme Court in 2021.
