Taiwan, China’s ultimatum to the US: “Internal Matter”. The minister warns Blinken

Tension is rapidly rising between China and the US for Taiwan: the confrontation is in danger of turning into conflict. “The Taiwan issue is China’s internal matter” and “the United States has no right to interfere in the way the Taiwan issue is resolved.” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his US counterpart Antony Blinken, and in his statements – reported in the Beijing press – the Chinese minister reiterated that “China’s position on the resolution of the issue of Taiwan was consistent and unambiguous, and that China will continue to adhere to the basic principles of ‘peaceful reunification and one country, two systems'”.

“The Taiwan issue is at the heart of China’s fundamental interests and carries significant weight in the minds of the Chinese people,” Wang stressed, adding that Beijing’s mission is “to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and there is absolutely no no ambiguity about it.”

As early as last September 19, China had warned US President Biden that if things didn’t change, “all the necessary mirage” would be taken. The Chinese government criticized Biden’s statement that US forces would defend Taiwan if Beijing tried to invade the island. Beijing, through Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning, said it “strongly deplored” Biden’s words and “complained on the side of the US”. Mao urged Washington to “treat Taiwan issues with prudence” and “not send wrong signals” to supporters of Taiwan independence “to prevent further damage to China, the United States and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.” Beijing – the spokesman concluded – will “do its best” for the prospect of “peaceful reunification”, but will not tolerate “any activity aimed at dividing China”, reserving “the possibility of taking all necessary measures”, Mao said.
