Russia, violent crackdown on anti-mobilization protests: “Hundreds of arrests”

More than 700 people were arrested, including more than 300 in Moscow and nearly 150 in St. Petersburg. It is the balance of what is happening in Russia, according to reports Ovd-Infoan independent website that monitors political prisons in Russia.

“Some of the people arrested are minors,” added Ovd-Info. The demonstrations followed protests that erupted after Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an effort to bolster his volunteer forces fighting in Ukraine, announced the call-up of experienced and qualified army reservists. The Defense Ministry said around 300,000 people will be called up for active duty, but the order left a door open for many more on-duty calls.

Most Russian men between the ages of 18 and 65 are automatically counted as reservists. Today, police were mobilized into forces in cities where the protests were planned by opposition group Vesna and supporters of imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Police moved quickly to arrest the protesters, most of them young people, before they could organize the protests.
