The European Union approves new sanctions against russia, the eighth package put on the table by Brussels against Moscow after the invasion of Ukraine. The announcement was made by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen: “I welcome the agreement reached today by the Member States on the eighth sanctions package. French President Emmanuel Macron spoke about committing to new sanctions on Russia in a phone call with Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian president then urgently called for new measures against Moscow also a Giorgia Meloni, with whom I had spoken yesterday by phone. Precisely the issue of sanctions is in danger of becoming the subject of controversy in the centre-right, with the League repeatedly expressing itself critically, claiming that they are not really hurting Russia, but European families and businesses.
“As for sanctions, the EU institutions have so far demonstrated the necessary unity, leadership, pragmatism and realism, we must ensure that we continue to have substantial support for these measures. But as already mentioned, at the same time today it is necessary for the EU to implement measures to support companies and families“, commented Marco Zanni, MEP of the Northern League and president of the Identity and Democracy group, in his speech to today’s plenary. “We need the burden of these measures not to fall on the citizens, who expect hard times before winter.“.
The impact of sanctions was also heavily criticized by countries such asHungary. Zoltan Kovacs, spokesman for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, assured in a tweet, quoting the Foreign Minister: “The new EU sanctions do not harm Hungary’s interests as exemptions have been granted from any new EU sanctions that would violate Hungary’s interests and jeopardize the security of our energy supply.“.
