War in Ukraine, EU mea culpa: “We didn’t think Putin would invade, we underestimated the alarms”

The European Union has not done everything in its power to try to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine. This is admitted by the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, in his speech at the Conference of EU Ambassadors: “At the beginning, we didn’t think there would be this resistance from Ukraine. And before we thought there would be no war. I have to admit, here in Brussels the Americans said ‘they are going to attack, they are going to attack’ and we are reluctant to believe that. At one point, Blinken, the US Under Secretary of State, called me and said ‘it happens this weekend’. Two days later the attack on Kiev began.”

Borrell then recalled the excellent relations with the nation led by Joe Biden: “Transatlantic relations have never been as good as they are today, but who knows what will happen in two years or even in November. What would have happened if Donald Trump or someone like him in the White House had been in Biden’s shoes? What would the US response have been to the war in Ukraine and what would our reaction have been in a different situation? We must assume greater responsibilities in terms of security.”
