The coronation of King Charles III will take place on Saturday 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey. Also present at the ceremony will be the Queen Consort, Camilla Parker Bowles, who will be crowned alongside her.
From what has been leaked so far about the ceremony, it appears that King Charles III is determined to have a quick, low-cost ceremony compared to Elizabeth II’s, which took place nearly 70 years ago. Among the main reasons for this choice would be concern about the war in Ukraine, the general increase in prices for citizens, skyrocketing inflation and the desire to give “a more modern and moderate image of the monarchy”.
The international press claims that the ceremony will be highly reduced and will go from almost 4 hours to just over an hour. Even the dress code will be more relaxed: ermine robes and tiaras are prohibited.
Carlos III would also have asked for the language of the ceremony be adapted to a contemporary audience. What remains is the luxurious state carriage, recently restored for the queen’s platinum jubilee. The future king would also have given an important role to his son William, now Prince of Wales. The eldest son of Charles III will, in fact, form part of the steering committee created for the ceremony.
It is unknown what the role of second son Harry will be, who has yet to deliver an autobiography to the press that promises to shake up the royal family. Camilla will be crowned alongside her husband as Queen Consort.
It also seems that Carlo wants to cut the list of members of the royal family, which now has 14 names. The new ruler would like to reduce the family to 7: he, Camilla, William and Kate, his sister Anna, his brother Edward and his wife Sophie. The heir to the throne would like to eliminate the rest from public fees.
