Dennis Peak51 years old with Down Syndrome residing in Mount Holly in North Carolina, he worked at that fast food restaurant for over 20 years. At the American chain restaurant Wendy’s from Stanleyit became something of an institution: everyone knew his face in the area, and his disability was never an issue.

In recent days, however, a ray of blue has abruptly interrupted his peace of mind: the man was fired without warning from the company because “he was not considered normal enough to carry out the required tasks”. A decision that generated no little controversy, so much so that the company immediately backtracked, informing Dennis’ family that the resignation letter had been sent in “error”.

By now, however, Peek’s sister has made it known that her brother has decided to back out of the proposal and that preparations for his retirement party are already underway. It will be held on November 5th at Stanley City Park. The municipal administration offered to contribute to the organization of the event.

Last Week’s Story: “Let’s Boycott Wendy’s”

The resignation letter was received from the employee’s sister, Young Turner Pussywho told the story in anger and disbelief last October 5 via a Facebook post.

The woman’s message provoked the indignation of users, soon going viral on the network. Many subscribers to the platform flooded Turner’s Facebook wall with messages of support for his brother. A hail of fierce controversy against the restaurant’s management also followed. There were also insults and calls to boycott the network. The same followers of the woman also advised her to file a multi-million lawsuit against the fast food multinational.

Peek’s story caused a stir in public opinion, also attracting the attention of the American media. Wendy’s management, worried about possible damage to his image, then tried to reverse it.

The company’s turnaround, but Peek has already decided: he will celebrate his retirement

As reported by local broadcaster WSOC-TV, the Carolina Restaurant Group – owner of the local Wendy’s office – reportedly contacted the former employee’s sister again by phone, apologizing for the incident and attributing Peek’s dismissal to a “fault in protocol”.

During the same phone call, the company also offered to reinstate Peek into the restaurant’s staff and offered to cover the expenses of his upcoming bachelorette party. “We care about Dennis, we’re in touch with the family, and we can’t wait to have him back with us,” Carolina Restaurant Group said in a later statement about their phone conversation with Turner.

“My heart is overwhelmed by the support you’ve all given my brother and me. Thank you all so much,” Turner later wrote in an update to her grievance post, informing followers of her brother’s reinstatement proposal. But Dennis replied “no thank you”: from what is known in the third and final update of the viral post, Turner announced his brother’s decision to retire anyway and that they were already thinking about preparations to celebrate his retirement.

Dennis’ retirement party will be held next November 5th at Harper Park, a public park in the city of Stanley, as announced by his sister via Facebook. “Dennis and his sister gladly accepted our proposal to host the party. We are honored and excited to be able to help,” he said. CNN Deason tugmayor’s spokesperson Gary Weisenberger.
