The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution condemning Russia’s illegal annexation of four regions of Ukraine conquered during the war that began on February 24. 143 countries voted in favor of the resolution, 5 against and 35 abstained, including China and India. The five votes against came from Belarus, North Korea, Nicaragua, Russia and Syria.
China’s abstention from the ‘farce’ referendum was announced by Chinese Deputy Ambassador to the UN Geng Shuang. During the special session of the General Assembly, Geng said, “We have always believed that any action by the Assembly should contribute to de-escalation of the situation and resumption of dialogue. The presented draft resolution does not achieve these objectives. Therefore, the Chinese delegation will abstain from voting.” Then the number two of the Chinese representation at UN Headquarters said that China “is deeply concerned about the recent escalation of the conflict, civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure. Moderation is urgently needed now”.
