“Here again? Good heavens!”: King Charles III’s gaffe or spite towards Liz Truss? Last night, the British sovereign received the Prime Minister at Buckingham Palace for the traditional Wednesday audience. Cameras filmed Truss as he bowed and said, “Your Majesty, it’s a pleasure to see you again,” but the room’s microphones also captured Carlo’s response: “Back dear, oh dear”, which in Italian translates to ” Here we go, here again. Oh my!”.
The exclamation, typical of the aristocratic class, usually indicates regret, disappointment or negative surprise, so the media read us the new king’s willingness to express to the conservative prime minister his concern about how he is dealing with the political turmoil and financial difficulties of the Kingdom. United. The eldest son of Elizabeth II and Philip followed the sentence with a slight smile and cordial tones before conducting the interview behind closed doors.
So: was it out of protocol to break the ice or a little revenge for Liz Truss’s “no” to Carlos III, known for his ecological commitment, to attend the COP27 climate conference to be held in Egypt next month? Given the political implications, in fact, Buckingham Palace had asked the prime minister for an opinion that would veto both the King and the heir to the throne William of England, thus exacerbating the no longer idyllic relations with the Windsors. Slip or revenge, one thing is for sure: Queen Elizabeth II would not have behaved like that. Charles III will be crowned king on the 6th of May and opted for an economic coronation ceremony that earned him the nickname “the sober”.
