Major maneuvers in Belarus with Moscow sending fresh troops to the country, Russia’s first ally committed to invading Ukraine. The Ministry of Defense in Minsk shared a video showing the first Russian units arriving in Belarus that will form part of a new joint military force. According to the ministry’s press office, the decision to create a regional grouping of troops was “implemented solely in the interest of strengthening the protection and defense of the border”. Colonel Viktor Tumar, deputy chief of staff of the Armed Forces in Minsk, explained that the group will carry out “routine combat training exercises in reaction to a growing NATO military deployment in Eastern Europe”. This, Tumar continued, would indicate “an increasing threat to the military security of the Republic of Belarus and the State of the Union, which requires urgent measures.” A “defensive” move that can only increase tension in the area even further, as clashes on the ground between the Ukrainian counteroffensive and Russian forces are growing increasingly intense.
