Protests in Iran after Mahsa Amini’s Death

Arman was arrested in Tehran in early October for participating in anti-government demonstrations that erupted after the death of Masha Amini, beaten and killed for “not wearing the veil properly”. The 29-year-old man said that tortured by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard for four days after the arrest.

Arman recounted how immediately in an exclusive interview with CNN. “Prisoners are also tortured with electric shocks, drownings and mock executions” explained the young man to the international press. “I was kidnapped for days in solitary confinement, then I was locked in a cell with other protesters – he said -. With me was a woman with several cuts on her face and neck. She told me that she was raped by agents”.

According to the 29-year-old, the detention center is located far from the Tehran prison, but it is not possible to establish with certainty where it is. “I was taken there after being hit by a taser and losing consciousness – he said -. None of us know where that place was. To get out I had to sign a false declaration stating that I received money from the US, UK and Israel to wreak havoc in Iran.”

What happened to Arman would form part of a playbook tested by the Iranian government to go after activists, protesters and political opponents. These are strategies already implemented in 2019, after the price of gas increased by 50%. The price increases caused several protests that later resulted in thousands of arrests.

CNN spoke with at least 12 Iranians who shared accounts of the days in captivity following the protests. Many explained that they were beaten, tortured and raped in solitary confinement. Others, however, had to deal with the disappearance of loved ones.

“There are hundreds of people who end up in these detention centers every day – said Farhad, a 37-year-old father arrested after street protests over the death of Masha Amini and tortured for 16 days -. There was a room with a bed. people were tied up and tortured. Some were raped. Other civilians were hung from the ceiling and beaten.”
