The election results of half term 2022, while the counting of votes on 8 November is concluded. In all likelihood, the Republicans are on their way to victory over the Democrats in the House of Representatives, albeit with a smaller margin than expected, but they have not yet managed to establish themselves in the Senate, partially refuting the polls and predictions of the day before. Defeat by half, therefore, for the incumbent president João Biden over which the shadow of its predecessor continues to hover, Donald Trump🇧🇷 Let’s look specifically at what happened in the United States, how the composition of the two Houses of Congress will change after the midterm elections, and how this outcome could affect the 2024 presidential election.
The results of the midterm elections for the House and Senate
As we know, with the elections the two Houses of Congress are renewed: the United States Senate and the House of Representatives. With these votes, all 435 deputies and 35 of the 100 senators are renewed. At the moment, as far as the House is concerned, 169 seats have been assigned with certainty to the Democrats, while 193 are the prerogative of the Republicans. The majority is 218 and projections suggest that Republicans can reach it, albeit with a smaller gap than assumed the day before. The situation is different in the Senate, where there are 48 Democratic seats and 47 Republican seats: here President Joe Biden’s party is in serious danger of subverting the previous day’s predictions and winning a narrow majority (we will probably have to wait for the Georgia vote result, where candidates Warnock and Walker may be forced to vote).
What happens now
The hot topics of these elections were the economy, abortion and foreign policy in Ukraine, on which Republicans have different positions. On this last point in particular, Marjorie Taylor Greene, a deputy close to the Qanon sect, during a rally alongside former President Trump declared: “With a Republican majority, Ukraine will not spend a penny.”
But above all, today’s results are also important for the former US president. Donald Trump as the former tycoon had stated that he would run for the 2024 presidential election if the midterm elections are successful.
The results of the referendum on abortion in 5 states
On Tuesday, voters in five states were also called to vote in a referendum on abortion: in Michigan, California and Vermont to guarantee the right to reproductive freedom, in Kentucky and Montana to limit access to termination of pregnancy. Instead, Tennessee voted for the abolition of slavery.
