Gal Costa, one of Brazil’s greatest singers, has passed away

Costa is one of the greatest exponents of the Brazilian tropical movementwhich also includes historical figures such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Maria Bethania.

After a hiatus from her shows during the coronavirus pandemic, Gal Costa had resumed her life on the Brazilian stages with great success until surgery halted that process. But in addition to that tour of Brazil, the singer was preparing a series of concerts in Europe in November, which had to be canceled due to the operation performed last September.

His most recent show was called “The Different Points of a Star”, in which he presented songs of great success and popularity from the 80s, such as: “Açaí”, “Nada mais”, “Sorte” and “Lua de mel”.

Gal Costa made his debut in 1964, together with Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Tom Zé, Gilberto Gil, in the show Nós.

In 1967 his first album ‘Domingo’ with Caetano was released, which contained one of his biggest hits Coração Vagabundo. Meanwhile, in 1968 he took part in the album Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis, one of the most important in the history of Brazilian music.

His first solo album was in 1969, under the same name, with hits such as Não Identificado and Que Pena. That same year he recorded his second solo album Gal with hits such as Meu nome é Gal and Cinema Olympia.

His other famous works include Cantar, Água Viva, Fantasia, Baby Gal, Gal, Recanto. The Brazilian star’s cause of death has not yet been reported.
