Hijacking alarm for an Emirates Boeing 777 that took off from Athens bound for New York. The plane on its route, once it reached the top of northern Sardinia, swerved suddenly, changing course and heading towards Gallura to return to Greece, via the route above Sicily. A notice to the aviator with “kidnapping” alert was sent to all managers of the Italian radar systems, technically the alert for a possible onboard hijacking. Two Air Force fighter jets took off from Gioia del Colle, but the Emirates plane, after more than four hours of navigation, finally returned to Athens airport. There may have been a technical problem at the origin of the manoeuvre, but the presence of a suspicious passenger on board cannot be excluded. Investigations by aeronautical authorities are ongoing.
