“Ron DeSantis is a mediocre and loyal administrator.” These were the statements of Donald Trump, who after the midterm election results attacked Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, which sealed his status as a rising star from the Republicans and likely candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
Trump had previously attacked the Florida governor, calling him a “moralist” and showing his supporters a series of polls that pointed him ahead in a possible head-to-head for the presidential election. In a lengthy statement, the former president dismissed him as a “soft politician” who approached him “in desperate conditions” when he ran for his first term in 2017.
“He had little approval, negative polls and no money,” he explained. “He said that with my support he could have won. The media was on his side, but he’s a mediocre Republican with good PR. He was a dead politician. who benefited from my help,” he concluded.
The mogul attacked the Republican rising star in a lengthy post on his social media Truth using the nickname she coined for him. “Ron the fanatic – he wrote – was desperate for my help. In 2020 I won a million more votes than him”.
For the midterm election, Trump gave his support, among others, to the candidate Mehmet Oz but he lost his Senate race in Pennsylvania against Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman, thus giving the Democrats a strategic victory. The former president has always opposed DeSantis’ candidacy, perhaps seeing him as the only real opponent to be beaten in view of a new candidacy for 2024.
The results achieved by Republicans, especially those supported by Trump, now make it difficult to announce a new election campaign for 2024. Currently, Trump’s hopes of winning in a hypothetical confrontation with DeSantis are minimal.
