American conspiracy theorist Alex Jones faces further damage for his false allegations regarding the elementary school shooting in the American city of Sandy Hook. A Connecticut court ordered him to pay $473 million.
A month ago, a Connecticut jury ordered Jones and his company, Infowars, to pay $965 million to the families of the eight victims who were shot. Jones falsely claimed that the shooting was orchestrated by the government to enforce the gun ban.
Jones now faces nearly $1.5 billion in fees. A third case is still pending in Texas. Also, all of Jones’ assets will be frozen tonight.
Years of threats
The conspiracy theorist calls the sum “nonsense” and “joke” and says he has no money to pay for all the damages. “I’m laughing at this,” he said on the show. It is unclear whether Jones will pay part of the amount and what will happen if he does not.
On December 14, 2012, a gunman killed his mother, then 26 others, including 20 children, at a school, and then himself. Conspiracy theories spread through Infowars and a Jones program resulted in years of threats and harassment from parents of deceased children.
The public prosecutor is happy with the decision. “Those who profit from lies directed at the innocent will be brought to justice,” he says. Jones states that he still has several hundred thousand dollars in his savings account. He describes the process as unjust and an attack on freedom of expression.
