Migrant ship rejected by Italy docked in Toulon military port

The SOS Méditerranée rescue ship Ocean Viking docked in the military port of the French city of Toulon, in the Mediterranean Sea, which holds about 230 migrants rescued from distress. Previously, the ship was rejected by Italy, causing it to be lost at sea for more than two weeks.

Immigrants stay in a special area that does not legally belong to French territory. There they receive medical attention and are examined for a possible criminal record. It is also checked whether they are eligible for asylum application. Those who are not granted asylum are sent back to their country of origin.

France had previously said a third of the migrants, Germany a third and the rest would spread among other EU countries.

Diplomatic conflict France and Italy

Italy’s refusal to allow the ship to enter its ports led to a diplomatic confrontation between France and Italy. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin described Italy’s stance as “incomprehensible and selfish”.

Italy said France’s anger at rejecting 230 migrants was unfounded. Rome says it has received 90,000 migrants this year alone, and so far only Italy has addressed the problem.
