US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in an interview with NBC that the repression of protests against health restrictions is a sign of “weakness” by Chinese authorities. Blinken said citizens of all countries have the right to “make their frustration known” through peaceful protest.
“In any country where we see this happening and the government takes massive repressive measures to stop it, that is not a sign of strength. It’s a sign of weakness,” Blinken said. The secretary of state, who plans to visit China next year, declined to comment on the possible effects of the protests on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s authority. “China must understand how to move forward. in the treatment of Covid in a way that it can respond to the health needs, but also to the needs of the people”, Blinken limited himself to saying.
