In a letter published mid-month, the applicants expressed confidence in the vision of Maduro and other leaders to make the region “a driving force for a new level of Latin American unity and integration, anchored in continental solidarity and the values of peace and democracy”.
The letter, signed by former presidents Michelle Bachelet (Chile), Rafael Correa (Ecuador), Eduardo Duhalde (Argentina), Ricardo Lagos (Chile), José Mujica (Uruguay), Dilma Rousseff (Brazil) and Ernesto Samper (Colombia), among other political and academic actors, points to Unasur as “the best platform to re-establish a space for integration”.
This integration organization was founded in 2008, promoted by the late president Hugo Chávez and supported by other regional leaders, such as Brazil’s elected president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
