One person died and four were injured when agiant wave crashed into a cruise ship during a storm as it departed from the southern tip of South America.
There viking polaris was on her way to Ushuaia, Argentina (an important port of embarkation for Antarctic expeditions) when there was “an accident caused by aabnormal wave,” confirmed a spokesperson for the Viking cruise line in a statement.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm the death of a passenger following the accident. We inform the host’s family and share our deepest condolences,” the statement reads. Four other passengers on the cruise “suffered non-life-threatening injuries” and were being treated on board.
The vessel suffered minor damage and was anchored Ushuaia, 3,200 kilometers (almost 2,000 miles) from the capital Buenos Aires, with several windows broken, AFP reporters said. Viking said it was “investigating the facts surrounding this incident”.
Viking Polaris was launched in 2022 and is the newest vessel in the company’s fleet. The accident comes two weeks after the deaths of two tourists on another cruise to Antarctica. The two men, aged 76 and 80, disembarked from the World Explorer ship for an excursion in a Zodiac dinghy that capsized near shore.
