For many, Christmas is a time of joy and merriment. This is not the case for Garry Hollidge, a 47-year-old Englishman who suffers from a “bizarre” fear of Santa Claus. So crippling that he dreads even to leave the house at this time of year.

The 47-year-old Englishman, from Whitstable in Kent, said he discovered his “bizarre” phobia when he was around seven years old. “It is not much Santa Claus themselves, it’s those strange dancing figures that drive me crazy, because they’re so scary and the way they move is horrible – I can’t stand it.”

Early on, his parents tried to help him overcome his fear and bought him a fake ‘dancing’ Santa Claus to decorate their house, but this only intensified Garry’s ‘hate’ feelings about it. “They thought it was funny and that it would help me, but it got 10 times worse over the years,” she said.

Garry used to go shopping with his mother as a child, but couldn’t leave the house during the holidays.

‘School was also a difficult period, because my friends always invited me to their house and their mothers invited me to dinner. I had to secretly find out if they had a dancing Santa at home, and if they did, I would come up with any excuse not to go,” she admits. “I kept my secret safe so the kids at school never knew and luckily I went. bullied.”

Garry forbade his family to display any Santas. “Isn’t it funny because they can appear anywhere and anytime, it’s a nightmare…”
