CSIC reported today that the robot has a GPS system for outdoor navigation, using tools like Google Maps to guide it to various locations, including stores, restaurants and hospitals.

Similarly, the researchers applied machine vision algorithms that helped them navigate and identify specific objects such as road signs, traffic lights, streets, people, chairs, tables, computers or QR code information.

In addition to its usefulness in guiding the blind, its makers highlighted its potential when it comes to helping the elderly suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

“In addition to notifying the owner when he has a doctor’s appointment, Tefi can direct him directly to the doctor’s office using a map, only if accessible; Thanks to its mobile network connection, the robot can also order a taxi, so that the patient has to do almost nothing,” says researcher Gerardo Portilla, PhD student in robotics and the “father” of this robot dog.

The researcher explained that the “dog” is very durable and dynamic in harsh environments and is much cheaper than a guide dog; and that the necessary artificial intelligence for object, person and signal recognition, as well as automatic driving for route guidance, has already been developed.

The robot, which can communicate audibly with the person who has to perform the requested tasks, can also share what it sees through the camera and the information it gets from the internet.

So far, researchers at the institute have conducted several navigation tests that confirm that the robot can guide the user to different parts of the building using voice commands, and the scientists hope to soon begin testing how it navigates Tefi beyond the atmosphere. is more dynamic.
