The long-term goal is to definitely say goodbye to single use, that is, the use of plastic or paper plates, cups and bowls, but the only way to do this is to start offering reusable products. With this policy, Deutsche Bahn, the main German railway company that manages the rail service in Germany, decided to place china or glass cups and plates on board its trains.
The novelty will be presented from January 1st, when passengers who go to restaurants and bars on trains will be served with reusable products. Specifically, according to a statement from Deutsche Bahn, travelers will be able to choose between “porcelain” and “high-quality glass” when ordering food and drink on board trains running long-distance or high-speed routes.
Reusable cups, plates and bowls will therefore be offered to customers free of charge and without any deposit for all orders from the train’s bistros. Plastic and cardboard packaging will still be available upon customer request. “Deutsche Bahn continues its green transformation,” said the rail operator’s head of passenger services, Michael Peterson.
As part of its efforts to reduce its environmental impact, more than 50% of the dishes offered on Deutsche Bahn trains have been vegan or vegetarian since March, said the company, which has set a goal to become carbon neutral by 2040.
