Iran stops at nothing. Farideh Moradkhani, granddaughter of Iranian Supreme Guide Ali Khamenei, was sentenced to three years in prison after appealing to the international community to cut ties with Tehran, for the repression implemented against the protest movement in the country. Moradkhani’s lawyer, Mohammad Hossein Aghassi, announced on social media the sentence handed down by a “special clergy court” which he said would have no jurisdiction over the case. This was reported by Iran Wire and Iran International.
Khamenei’s granddaughter was arrested on November 23 after recording a video urging “freedom-loving” governments to expel Iranian ambassadors to show support for the anti-government protest movement that has swept Iran for more than 12 weeks. Badri Hosseini Khamenei – Moradkhani’s mother and the supreme leader’s sister – published an open letter on 6 December criticizing her brother and his “authoritarianism”. To understand what measures will be taken against him, however, the sentence for his daughter has arrived.
