Twitter In recent hours, the accounts of several journalists have been restored after social network owner Elon Musk accused them of sharing details of their movements and endangering their families.
Musk announced the lifting of the ban after polling his followers in a poll asking whether users who shared their real-time location should have their accounts back immediately or within seven days.
“The people spoke. Accounts that posted my location are now being undone,” the businessman said in a tweet after nearly 59% of the more than 3 million votes registered in the consultation supported the option.
The suspensions have been criticized by several governments and international organizations as a possible attack on press freedom.
Since early Saturday, the accounts of most of the blocked journalists – mainly reporters specializing in media technology, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post and CNN, among others – have been active again.
Some, however, remained blocked, including well-known political commentator Keith Olbermann and that of Linette Lopez, a business journalist who has thoroughly investigated Musk himself.
Musk justified the bans by saying journalists broke new usage rules announced this week by Twitter, which forbid the social network from sharing a person’s real-time location.
This all happened after Twitter suspended the @elonjet account, which still consisted of the movements of the tycoon’s private jet using public information and of his manager, Jack Sweeney.
Several of the blocked journalists later wrote about @elonjet’s suspension, a measure Musk himself vowed not to take.
“My commitment to freedom of expression extends to not suspending the account tracking my plane. although this poses a direct risk to personal safety,” he said a month ago.

Despite the lifting of the ban on several journalists, the account that tracked the movements of Musk’s private jet remains blocked.
