A new era has begun. The Bank of England today unveiled revamped banknotes featuring King Charles III: the King’s portrait will appear on all four existing polymer banknotes (£5, 10, 20 and £50), with no further depictions of changes. The sovereign’s image will appear on the front of the banknotes, as well as a cameo in the transparent security window. Expected to enter circulation in mid-2024. All polymer banknotes featuring a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II remain current and the public can continue to use them as normal.
In line with instructions from the Royal House, to minimize the environmental and financial impact of this change, new banknotes will only be printed to replace used ones and to satisfy any global increase in demand. Banknotes featuring Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III will therefore be in circulation at the same time. By the way, some statements from Governor Andrew Bailey arrived: “It is with great pride that the Bank announces the design of our new banknotes that will have the portrait of King Carlos III. This is an important moment, as the King is only the second monarch to appear in our notes. Citizens will be able to use these new banknotes when they start circulating in 2024.
