A strong shake of earthquake of magnitude 6.4 hit the north coast of California🇧🇷 According to reports from the US Geophysical Institute USGS, the earthquake was located at a depth of about 16 km, about 12 km southwest of Ferndale.

The earthquake was recorded at 2:34 am local time (11:34 am in Italy) and – writes CNN – did not trigger a tsunami warningaccording to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

According to initial information, the violent shock, followed by at least two aftershocks, caused some damage, but so far there are no injuries or victims. Particularly the earthquake damaged the power grid. “This was a ‘great’, the electricity in Ferndaleca ended and the whole house is upside down”, reads a publication published on Twitter.

Poweroutage.us reports that more than 50,000 homes in Humboldt County, the area hit by the earthquake, were without electricity. “Power out across the county. Do not call 911 unless you have an immediate emergency,” tweeted the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services.

The New York Times published a video of an area resident showing numerous objects that fell to the floor in his home after the earthquake.

Tonight’s quake follows the 6.2 magnitude one recorded in nearby Cape Mendocino – still in Humboldt County – recorded exactly one year ago, on December 20, 2021. California is regularly hit by earthquakes: magnitude 6.7 in 1994 in Northridge, northwest of Los Angeles, caused at least 60 deaths and damage estimated at $10 billion; a 6.9 earthquake in San Francisco in 1989 killed 67 people.
