The Taliban in Afghanistan closed universities to all women

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Higher Education in a letter sent to all government and private institutions in the country. Thus, the Taliban regime betrays last year’s promises after taking power.

THE taliban announced the closure of women’s colleges in Afghanistan🇧🇷 The announcement was made by the Ministry of Higher Education in a letter addressed to all public and private universities in the country, according to the France Presse news agency. “We advise you to implement the above-mentioned order to suspend the girls’ education until further notice,” reads the letter signed by Neda Mohammad Nadeem🇧🇷

The new provision further restricts women’s access toformal education in Afghanistan, as they were already excluded from most secondary schools. Just three months ago, thousands of girls and women passed the entrance exams across the country.

But at that time radical restrictions had been imposed on the subjects to be studied, with veterinary, engineering, economics and agriculture banned and journalism severely restricted.

With the return to power in August 2021, the Taliban had to be more flexible, but in fact we can speak of a return in large part to the ultra-rigid interpretation of Islam that marked their first period in power, between 1996 and 2001.

At first, the university they were equipped with classrooms and entrances divided by gender. And in November, authorities banned women from visiting parks in the capital Kabul, arguing that Islamic laws were not being respected.

In response to the latest ban, a university student told the BBC that the Taliban were “afraid” of women and their power. “They destroyed the only bridge that could connect me to my future,” she said. “How can I react? I thought I could study and change my future or bring light into my life, but they destroyed it for me.”
