Russia is taking a deep breath and wants more. President Vladimir Putin called on national intelligence services to redouble their efforts to deal with the emergence of new risks and threats: he did so in a video message released on the occasion of ‘Workers’ Day in State Security Bodies’. “The ever-changing situation in the world and the emergence of new risks and threats place great demands on Russia’s entire system of security bodies,” the Kremlin chief said. To do so, he added, “it must further strengthen its operations in key sectors and make the most of its operational, technical and human potential”.
The Russian president also underlined the need to keep strategic energy and transport infrastructure under permanent surveillance, as well as places with a large influx of citizens. And he paid special attention to the situation, which he defined as “extremely complex”, in the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk and in the regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, regions of Ukraine annexed on September 30 during the invasion: “The people who live there, citizens of Russia, they trust you to defend them. And your duty is to do whatever it takes to ensure their safety and respect for their rights and freedoms.” The Russian number one also underlined the need to firmly oppose the action of foreign secret services, as well as to intensify the fight against extremism and economic crimes: «We must act more firmly in the sectors of defense of information resources, in the fight against economic crimes and corruption”.
