They allegedly stabbed him to death after an argument, the eight girls arrested in Toronto on suspicion of killing a 59-year-old man downtown. The victim was going through a period of difficulty and for this reason had recently been seen wandering, even at night, on the street and sleeping at the station. And it is precisely here that the murder would have occurred, as reported at a press conference by York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween.
The eight girls, who were arrested on charges of second-degree murder, are aged between 13 and 16. They would have set up a meeting on social media in a location not far from where the murder took place, but it is not clear whether the purpose of that meeting was really to piss anyone off. What is certain is that the girls attacked the man on Sunday morning in a square near the main train station in Canada’s largest city.
The 59-year-old man, whose identity has not yet been released, was rescued and transported to hospital, but died shortly afterwards of his injuries. Police were alerted by some passers-by who saw the injured man lying in the street overnight from Sunday to Monday. The murder weapon was recovered not far from there and thanks to the testimonies collected after meeting the victim, the agents were able to identify the girls in a few hours.
Speaking at a news conference, Toronto homicide detective Terry Browne said the 59-year-old, while not homeless, had recently moved into the city’s homeless shelter system, claiming that his house was getting sick. Police said the girls allegedly attacked and stabbed the victim after an altercation. The man was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, but died soon after.
According to Browne, the arrested girls come from different parts of the city and met on the night of the murder for reasons that are still unclear: “I wouldn’t talk about a real gang, but it’s clear that what happened on Sunday is very similar to the gang actions”.
