Biden warns Americans against extreme cold: ‘This is serious’

President Biden has warned Americans that the weather will get colder in the coming days. “It’s not like when it snowed one day when I was a kid,” he said at a briefing with White House officials. “This is serious.”

Extreme cold temperatures in the US this weekend are expected to drop to -45 degrees in places. More than half of states have issued weather alerts for cold weather, strong winds and snowfall yesterday and today.

Some major airports canceled more than 5,300 flights in total. Some airlines state that they do not charge additional fees for transfers. Freight traffic has also come to a standstill in some federal states.

The US Meteorological Institute expects the coldest Christmas in decades. “There will be a winter in which we live only once in a generation.”

President Biden urges everyone to heed local weather service alerts:

Weather services say there could be a so-called hurricane of bombs throughout the day. This term is used when strong winds occur when air pressure drops over a short period of time. On the east coast, services warn of a “life-threatening cold wind.”

Snowstorms may occur in some places. Experts warn that bare skin can freeze to death in five to ten minutes in this cold.

Nearly 200 million Americans will be affected by inclement weather. This is also the case in Florida, where the coldest Christmas celebrations in three decades are expected. But it’s also getting colder in other southern states. In El Paso, Texas, the temperature drops to about -9.5 degrees.
