According to the United States Geological Institute (USGS), the earthquake’s epicenter was out to sea eight miles west of the town of Ferndale, a town of about 15,000 people, in Humboldt County, about 220 miles north of San Francisco.
No serious damage or injury has been reported so far.
The quake, which struck at 02:34 a.m. (10:34 GMT), had a depth of 16.1 kilometers (10 miles) and was followed by multiple aftershocks, one measuring 4.6, according to the USGS.
According to local media reports, the California Highway Patrol has received evidence that the quake has caused cracks in an access bridge to Ferndale.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said no tsunami warnings related to the quake have been recorded so far.
