But the material damage is enormous: the power plug was completely destroyed, the first car of the train derailed, the aerial cables ended up broken and the tracks also suffered several damages. “The rails are damaged for a distance of 500 meters, an overhead line mast is completely bent. An electrical substation was also completely destroyed”, described the situation by Thomas Baeken, from the railway company Infrabel.
Due to the confrontation, the authorities suspended services between the city of Deinze and the municipality of Lichtervelde. “We expect the situation to continue like this throughout the week,” says Baeken.
Jean-Paul Esprit from Lichtervelde witnessed the incident: “I was walking my dog,” he told local broadcaster VRT. “I saw a truck right on top of the tracks. They literally had to grab the driver by the collar to get him out of the truck when the level crossing barriers closed.”
“Then there was a big bang. It was a real shock. The cabin of the truck is all crooked and deformed with the impact of the accident. It’s a real mess here”, added the witness.
