A Belgian man suspected of involvement in the violent robbery of a security van in North Amsterdam last May was arrested in Guinea last week. Like the other three suspects, he managed to escape after the attack.
Ibrahim A., 27, lived in hiding in the West African country as he was wanted internationally. A. still has to serve a 21-year sentence in Belgium for a series of robberies. He managed to escape from Sint-Gillis prison near Brussels in March 2020.
Belgium and Guinea are in contact regarding the man’s extradition.
Tracking in the Wild West
On May 19 last year, a security vehicle was attacked in Schöne Edelmetaal, which wanted to collect gold, among other things. Employees were threatened with guns and knives and tied up. Outside, a thief fired into the air to keep passersby away.
Shipping with a value of 67m euros on board, robbers stole gold bars and precious metals worth about 15m euros in various cars.
Then a “wild west chase” started with the police deployed en masse. The persecution ended in Broek in Waterland, a village north of Amsterdam. The police shot and killed one of the thieves.
In November, prosecutors sought eighteen years in prison for the seven suspects. OM requested a five-year prison sentence against an eighth suspect who played a much smaller role. Part of the loot, which exceeded 4 million euros, is still missing.
