OAS condemns “fascist” and “coup” actions in Brazil

“The Brazilian state and its democratic institutions will respond to the seriousness of the acts committed,” the diplomat said.

Both Almagro and the ambassadors of countries such as Colombia and Chile, whose leaders are part of South America’s new progressive wave, warned that events in Brazil are consistent with a pattern of attacks by the far-right on the continent.

Colombia’s representative Luis Ernesto Vargas described the events of the weekend and the radical Bolsonaristas as “actions by fascists and recalcitrant zealots” respectively.

Vargas felt that this is not an isolated attack, but that it responds to a “pattern” of “ignorance of the popular will, which aims to undermine the work of the region’s progressive governments”.

The Colombian ambassador to the OAS, on the other hand, criticized the body’s response to the situation in Brazil. “It seems to me that the role of the OAS has been really bad, and that should be acknowledged,” he told EFE.

In turn, the Honduran ambassador to the OAS, Carlos Quesada, pointed out at the Permanent Council meeting that events in Brazil would affect “the whole continent”.

“We don’t know where something that happens in Brazil next week will be repeated next year (…) this will become a bad habit,” the Central American diplomat lamented.

Following Sunday’s attack, about 1,500 Bolsonaro protesters were arrested by Brazilian authorities after storming the headquarters of the three powers, intent on overthrowing progressive Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a week after he took over the leadership of the state in Brazil.
