Street parties, light shows, and concerts around King Charles’ coronation

Buckingham Palace has announced the schedule for the coronation of King Charles of England on Saturday, May 6. Besides the usual ceremony, this weekend there are traditional processions, a concert at Windsor Castle, street parties and light shows.

“The King and Queen Consort hopes the Coronation Weekend will provide people with an opportunity to spend time and connect with their friends, family and communities in the UK, the Commonwealth and other regions where the Kingdom is celebrating,” the palace said in a statement. .

Westminster Abbey

The official part of Charles and Camilla’s coronation takes place at Westminster Abbey in London. This part of the ceremony will be predominantly traditional and religious in nature. The royal couple will parade from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey.

After the service, the couple returns to the palace, where they appear on the balcony with other members of the royal family.

The concert at Windsor Castle will take place on Sunday, May 7. It is not yet known who will perform, but according to Buckingham Palace, it is a fusion of “international music icons and contemporary artists.” There is also a “first class” orchestra accompanied by “some of the greatest entertainers and dancers”.

volunteer work

Several thousand Britons could attend the music event by drawing lots. Brits are also encouraged to take to the streets to celebrate and share their food on Sundays. One day later, Monday, May 8, is a holiday. Buckingham Palace hopes the British will use this time voluntarily.

It was not specified who was present at the coronation ceremony. For example, it is unclear whether King Charles’ youngest son, Harry, was invited. Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, have recently criticized the royal family in interviews, a documentary on Netflix and a book.

Charles, 74, became king of the United Kingdom in September after his mother, Queen Elizabeth, passed away.
