Federal prosecutors charged five German far-rightists with treason. According to the judiciary, four men and a woman were planning to kidnap the Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach, and stage a coup.
The case came to light in the spring of last year. Germany’s OM announced the official charges against five people today. They are also suspected of being members of a terrorist organization.
“Small but dangerous”
Five people have been in custody since April. The public prosecutor said in a statement at the time that the group set itself the goal of “creating civil war-like conditions in Germany through violence”.
The plan was to kidnap Minister Lauterbach by killing his bodyguards. After the arrests, the minister described the group as “small but very dangerous”. ARD Tagesschau reported at the time that the group wanted to stockpile ten thousand euros worth of weapons, mines and protective equipment.
In a Twitter message today, Lauterbach thanked all investigators for their work. “They risk their lives for us. This is a great success.”
In December, German police also arrested a group of 25 members and supporters of the far-right movement. Searched more than 100 places across the country.
It was a major German operation against the so-called “Reichsbürger”; . They do not recognize the Federal Republic of Germany and believe that German laws do not apply to them.
The five people currently facing charges come from another far-right group. The case against him will continue in the Koblenz district court at a later date.
