The announcement that the world has been waiting for, the Ukrainians in primis, has arrived. Joe Biden addressed the nation and said that the US would send 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine to defend against the Russians. “They are the most powerful in the world,” added the American president.
“Italy is sending artillery to Ukraine”, added Biden who, shortly before holding the press conference, heard Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the other European leaders Macron, Scholz and Sunak, or the main NATO allies of the USA, by video call.
“Putin expected Europe and the United States to facilitate decisions. He expected our support for Ukraine to crumble over time. He was wrong – Biden said again – These tanks are further proof of our unyielding commitment against Ukraine. It’s for freedom.” Training of the Ukrainian military in the use of Abrams will begin “as soon as possible,” Biden later assured. The US announcement came on the heels of Germany’s decision to send its Leopard tanks to Kiev.
