The order comes days after another federal judge pushed the March 5 deadline for the United States Department of State formally request Ovidio’s extradition to that country, where a court wants to try him for drug trafficking.
The Mexican military arrested Ovidio on January 5 in the northern state of Sinaloa and later transferred him to the Federal Center for Social Readjustment (Cefereso) No. 1 Altiplano, also known as Almoloya Prison, located in the Mexican statewhere his father was, who escaped there in 2015
The arrest was surprising as it came days before US President Joe Biden’s visit to Mexico on the occasion of the North American Leaders’ Summit, although Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador denied any connection between the two events.
The United States, which has been offering $5 million for his arrest since December 2021, accuses the alleged drug trafficker of crimes related to the conspiracy to introduce drugs into that country.
