The Organization of American States (OAS) has expressed its full support for Peru’s President Dina Boluarte, whose government is facing the worst wave of protests in the Andean country in two decades.
The OAS announcement, at a meeting of its permanent council in the presence of Boluarte, comes after protests in Peru have claimed at least 62 deaths and millions of victims following the constitutional and December arrest of former left-wing president Pedro Castillo.
Castillo, a leftist leader who tried to illegally dissolve Congress, is now being held for “rebellion.”
Boluarte requests OAS support for Peru election campaign

“Help Peru determine its fate through free elections,” Boluarte demanded during a virtual intervention before the Permanent Council of the OAS, based in Washington, which convened the minutes of the meeting to clarify its view of the country’s situation. to belong.
Boluarte said he had listened “with great attention” to contributions from his colleagues at the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Summit in Buenos Aires and thanked them by expressing their concern and solidarity with Peru.

Speaking to the OAS, Boluarte recalled that he had asked the Peruvian Congress to approve early elections “as soon as possible”.
“I sincerely hope that friendly countries in the region will support the only way out of the crisis,” he said, pointing out that this way out is “at the same time peaceful, constitutional and in keeping with the tradition of the OAS and the region. .”

We will not surrender to authoritarian groups: Boluarte
Boluarte guaranteed that he would not surrender to “authoritarian groups”. that they cannot force exits “outside the constitutional order”.
Boluarte stressed that his government defended the right to peaceful protest, but that the state must “guarantee security and order”.
