Israel intercepted rockets from Gaza and responded with air strikes

The Israeli military said it intercepted several rockets fired from the Gaza Strip last night. They were to be sent to southern Israel.

In response, the Israeli army launched airstrikes on targets in the Gaza Strip. No casualties were reported.

The news follows yesterday’s large-scale military operation by Israel in the occupied West Bank. Nine Palestinians were killed. This was Israel’s deadliest act in the West Bank in the last 20 years.

Following the violence in the West Bank, Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad vowed revenge. No one has claimed responsibility for last night’s rocket attacks.

Air raid sirens sounded twice in southern Israel. Three rockets were intercepted by Israel, one rocket landed in uninhabited areas and another failed to reach the Gaza Strip border. As far as is known, no injuries were reported.

Eight men and one woman were killed in Israel’s protest in Jenin in the West Bank yesterday morning. It was a three-hour raid on a refugee camp. The military said it was looking for militants to prepare for larger terrorist attacks.

Palestinian President Abbas, who rules the West Bank, declared national mourning. In addition, Palestinian security services severed ties with Israel. They often work together to track down militants.

There are concerns about climbing internationally. The US State Department urges all parties to remain calm.
